CTE Program Prepares Students to Work in SISD Classrooms

Sherman ISD is growing our own future educators through one of the many real-world learning opportunities available at Sherman High School.

The Teaching and Training program provides high school students with direct classroom experience and exposure to careers in education. Students learn education theory and strategies and participate in classroom observations and a hands-on practicum. 

Before they graduate from high school, they are able to earn the Educational Aide I certificate from the Texas Education Agency, an industry-based certification that allows them to go directly into paraprofessional roles in Texas public schools. 

Maria Chavarria, a 2024 graduate of SHS, earned her educational aide certificate and now works full-time as a classroom assistant at Sherman Middle School.

“The Teaching and Training program helped me feel ready for this position because I got a lot of hands-on experience,” Chavarria said. “I got to see how lesson planning went and what a day-to-day looks like inside a school.”

Chavarria also continues to further her education at Grayson College as she works toward a bachelor’s degree and a classroom of her own. Her supervising teacher at Sherman Middle School, Jaclyn Hyde, has been impressed with Chavarria’s preparedness and classroom skills.

“The program we offer is valuable because it takes a Sherman student and puts them back into Sherman schools,” Hyde said. “They know the Sherman way, how we work and what our goals are.”
