New Visitor Procedures Enhance Safety at SISD Schools

New Visitor Procedures Enhance Safety at SISD Schools

To improve the safety of students and staff, Sherman ISD has implemented new procedures for visitor entry into campuses.

These new procedures follow the installation of new exterior intercoms and cameras at the main entrances of all elementary campuses and Sherman Middle School as a part of district-wide technology and security updates funded through the 2023 bond.

Similar systems will be installed at the new early childhood center opening in 2027 as well as Piner Middle School and Jefferson Learning Center during planned bond renovations. Sherman High School, which was built in 2021 and expanded in 2025, already had these features.

Visitor Procedures

New Visitor Procedures

All visitors should enter through the main campus entrance, as all exterior doors are locked during the school day. Visitors should use the exterior intercom and camera to identify themselves, state the purpose of their visit, and present a valid photo ID.

Valid photo IDs include:

  • State-issued driver's licenses
  • State identification cards
  • U.S. passports or passport cards
  • Military identification cards

If allowed into the security vestibule, visitors should complete the check-in process, which includes a screening for registered sex offenders, using newly installed self-service kiosks at all campuses. To use a kiosk:

  • Tap Visitor Check In
  • Scan the back of your ID using the kiosk’s camera
  • Take a photo using the kiosk
  • Select your reason for visiting
  • Print and take your badge from the bottom of the kiosk

Visitors should visibly wear their issued badges while on campus and should check out using the kiosk.

If picking up a student early, the parent or guardian should remain in the front secured vestibule unless they need additional access. The parent or guardian should present a valid photo ID and complete the check-in process, and staff will then dismiss the student for early pick-up.

Mobile App Coming Soon

Sherman ISD will introduce a mobile app later this year to further streamline the check-in process and save visitors time on subsequent campus visits. The app, called VisitU, will allow parents, volunteers and guests who have previously scanned their ID to utilize a QR code from their smartphone to check in more quickly and receive a digital visitor pass.
